Person and purpose of the Holy Spirit
Richard Mason - 28 August 2020

Person and purpose of Holy spirit
So many people deny the Holy Spirits existence without any knowledge or experience .
If You had the opportunity to jump out of an aeroplane and experience sky diving
This would be an undeniable experience which you would remember all the days of your life.
Once someone has experienced the Holy Spirit, this becomes undeniable.
Some speak of the Holy Spirit as an it, or a power, or a ghost, or with suspicion
Once we understand more about The Holy Spirit our view will change
Some deny the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Until this power is seen and known
Tonight
Person and purpose of the Holy Spirit
Who is the Holy Spirit
How does the Holy Spirit work?
The Holy Spirit works in In us
The Holy Spirit comes upon us On us
The Holy Spirit works through us.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
When asked about describing someone we can either describe a persons physical appearance or their personality.
If you asked Sharon to describe me to you as a person, she would not say tall and most handsome man in the world. Even though it could be true.
She would say, Kind, loving, compassionate, caring, patient.
She is describing me as a person.
So if we ask the question describe the Holy Spirit.
We would use words like
Comforter, teacher, advocate, loving, kind, peaceful, patient.
This is describing The Holy Spirit as a person.
That’s because He is a person, even though we do not see him.
Purpose of the Holy Spirit
John 14:16
And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, so that He may be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see Him nor know Him. But you know Him, for He dwells with you and shall be in you.
What then is the purpose of the Holy Spirit?
Isn’t it funny that we have prayed so often and sung for the Holy Spirit to come. Come into our meetings, come from where? The moon? From space?
We go to special meetings because we hear that a special person with the anointing is coming, he will bring the Holy Spirit with him.
When the person arrives everyone is excited. Because this person brought the Holy Spirit with him.
Is this true?
Listen to what Jesus says
John 14 : 17
For He dwells with you and shall be in you.
Two important statements Jesus makes
The Holy Spirit dwells with you
Greek word : menō
To remain, not to depart, to be continuously present.
Never leave.
The second statement
The Holy Spirit shall be in you.
Where will he be? on the inside.
If you are a Christian, he is both with you, and in you always.
When we gather lets change our prayer to something like this.
He is already here so we don’t need to pray that he will
Show up
We should pray that he will Show himself. Or manifest himself.
Show up, and Show. Very different
We should understand that the Holy Spirit is dwelling in us, and he manifests himself through us.
I wasd listening to a young man many years ago telling me that he wanted to become a Christian.
But he couldn’t vecome one until he had fixed himself.
The Holy Spirit is living in us, to comfort us, to teach us, He fixes us to facilitate transformation.
Every area of my life needs to be transformed, he works in us to change us.
He will change every part of me that I willingly surrender to him.
Change my thinking, change my attitudes, change my perspectives, soften and change my heart, heal my emotions. Convict us of ungodliness.
So difficult for us to acknowledge that we need transformation, the Holy Spirit also helps us to see this need.
The Holy Spirit coming upon us
Acts 1:8
But you shall receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you. And you shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Again Jesus makes two statements
You shall receive power
This word Power comes from Greek word : dunamis
Strength, power, ability
Jesus life models the way for our understanding
Mark 1:10
And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him.
The purpose of the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus was to empower him for ministry.
Jesus tells his disciples
They will receive the same power for the same purpose.
Your lives will be testify of my life in you as a witness
You will receive
Temptation overcoming power
Lifestyle manifesting power
Witness working power
Miracle working power
Martyr facing power
In Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
We might not be called to go into all the world
But we are all called to be witnesses in our world
For us today, our world is our circle of influence we live in.
Some of us might be called to other regions, or countries
The Holy Spirit working through us.
Lets reason together
1.Jesus speaks to the disciples 11
Mathew 28 !9-20
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
This was not just for these men, this is for all Christians
How do we know this?
We know that all of these men died, history has recorded this for us.
Jesus said : To the very ends of the age.
Generation after generation would continue this work
Authority
Jesus gave the instruction to these men, 3 and ½ years after he called them, he had spent time, equipping and teaching And training them.
Now he was ready to launch them into destiny.
Example
My son loves to teach from the bible, he has been married for 12 years.
When he was newly married he wanted to start teaching others about marriage.
He would have done a good job teaching the theory, but he had no experience to back this up.
After 12 years, he now has both, knowledge and experience, which means he can speak with authority.
So for the time Jesus spent with these men he not only gave them knowledge, they also gained experience, which gave them authority to speak.
At that point, they were ready for the power.
Another point to reason
Scripture often draws parallels between wine and the Holy Spirit.
A question
If I took freshly pressed grape juice, put it into a lovely wine bottle and put a label on the bottle which read red wine. What would I have?
Freshly pressed grape juice in a wine bottle.
If you drank it, what will you get, what effect would it have on you?
Cheap grape juice, Quench your thirst.
If I wanted the grape juice to become wine, what would I need to do.
It would need to be matured.
This would mean pouring the grape juice into a wine barrel, adding other fruit to it and then closing it up.
The longer the juice stays in the barrel, the more mature it becomes.
When I pour it out after 3 ½ years and give it to others, what effect will it now have.
Those drinking it, will become intoxicated.
The Holy Spirit in us is working to mature us, to sanctify us, to heal us and to restore us.
At the right time, the winemaker declares the wine ready for consumption.
This wine intoxicates others as they see and listen.
The Holy Spirit coming upon us is to empower us for becoming witnesses who speak with authority.
The Holy Spirit working through us, is for impacting, influencing and ministering to those who are in need of Jesus and salvation, healing and restoration.
(John 7:38)
He who believes on Me, as the Scripture has said, "Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
What did Jesus mean?
Some have translated this to mean
Believing in the existence of Jesus
John 7 : 38 Amplified Bible
He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said
Definitions
Adheres to
Fully committed,
Trusts in
firm belief in the reliability of truth
Relies on
depend on with full confidence.
He who believes on me, As the Scripture has said.
Example
A new believer does not know what the scripture says
In time as we become fully committed, a firmly believer in truth, and fully depends on scripture
Streams of living water will flow out of this person.
For our understanding
Think about a water pipe coming down from a mountain river.
If the pipe has blockages like stones, mud, in it, the water cannot flow well.
Once the blockages are removed, the water flows out of the pipe with a strong flow.
This is what the Holy Spirit living in us is doing, removing blockages.
Sin, pain, unforgiveness, selfishness, anger, wrong teaching
He is removing all the blockages so that the river can flow out of us preparing us for when the power comes upon us it influences and impacts those around us.
